Chelsea finished 6th in the Premier League in 2011/12 and so failed to qualify for the Champions League by League position. However by beating Bayern Munich in the 2011/12 Champions League final they qualified for this seasons competition as holders, taking the Champions League place of fourth-placed Spurs.
