Based
on the first two matches Leeds were eliminated from Europe on the
away goals rule. However at one stage of the match at Elland Road
Stuttgart had fielded four foreign players rather than the maximum
permitted three. The result was declared void and Leeds were awarded
the match 3-0 meaning that a play-off was needed, which was staged
in Barcelona.
