      Intertoto Cup

Nobody seemed to have told the Geordie fans that the Intertoto Cup was a 'second-rate' competition with over 100,000 fans attending the three matches at St James' Park.

Newcastle narrowly missed out on a place in the UEFA Cup when they lost one of the three finals in the competition to Troyes. The home match against the French side was a memorable one but the 4-4 draw at St James' Park saw them defeated on the away goals rule.
