Newcastle were one of 11 Intertoto Cup Third Round winners to progress to the 2nd Qualifying Round of the UEFA Cup. Newcastle then progressed further in the UEFA Cup than any of the other 10 clubs so were classed as Intertoto Cup winners for the season. Not the most glamorous way to win a piece of silverware but hey, they all count!

  

As clubs the size of Newcastle need to be in Europe every season, the Magpies ended their summer break early for the second season in a row to attempt to qualify for the UEFA Cup via the re-vamped Intertoto competition.
