The European Super Cup  match was between the 1985/86 winners of the European Cup, Steaua Bucharest, and European Cup-Winners' Cup, Dynamo Kiev. Because of difficulties arranging a two-legged final the destination of the trophy was decided in a single match at the neutral Monaco ground.
