  Leading League goalscorer:
Walter Abbott
 (Small Heath)
 33  goals

The season after
they had been playing the likes of Kettering and Long Eaton when finishing fourth from bottom of the Midland League Glossop North End finished just behind Manchester City to win a promotion spot from Division 2 with Manchester United (Newton Heath) and Arsenal (Woolwich Arsenal) below them. The Derbyshire town of Glossop became the smallest town to stage League football, a record it held for over a century until Rushden & Diamonds played at Irthlingborough.

At the bottom Darwen entered the record books with the worst defensive record in League history when conceding 141 goals in their 34 Second Division  matches. They lost 10-0 three times away from home and their 109 goals against in their away matches is the only time a century of away goals has been scored against a club in a League season.
