Severe winter weather saw dozens of  matches postponed throughout the Football League with the season not finishing until mid-June, 7 weeks after the FA Cup final had been played. Stoke needed a last-day win at Sheffield United on June 14th to pip Liverpool for the League title but lost 1-2 to give the Anfield club their 5th League championship.
