It was a memorable season for Port Vale. In addition to taking the Division 3 (North) title they became the second side from the Third Division to reach an FA Cup semi-final. They had beaten Stanley Matthews' Blackpool side in the 5th round before what was a home record attendance at the time of 42,000 but lost by the odd goal in three to the eventual cup winners WBA in the semi-final at Villa Park.

Brothers Alan, Herbert and John Keen were all in the Barrow team which played at Port Vale on August 31st 1953.
