The Premier League made its debut following the withdrawal of the First Division clubs from the Football League. The Premier League, under the control of the Football Association, kicked off on Saturday August 15th with Brian Deane scoring the first goal after 5 minutes, for Sheffield United against eventual champions Manchester United.

The final Saturday of the first Premier League season - Saturday 8th May 1993 - saw the highest Premier League goals scored in a day - which survives to this day.

Arsenal beat Sheffield Wednesday in the Wembley finals of both the FA Cup and Coca Cola Cup.

Leeds United became the first  club ever not to win an away League match the season after winning the League championship.
