Chesterfield came close to becoming the first club from the lower divisions to appear in an F.A. Cup Final. They led Middlesbrough 2-0 at Old Trafford in the semi-final before eventually drawing 3-3, but had a 'goal' controversially disallowed. The replay was a disappointment for them, losing 3-0 at Hillsborough
