The first competitive match ever played by Colchester United was on Saturday August 28th 1937 when they lost 0-3 at Yeovil & Petters United in the Southern League. Sixty-nine years later, on Saturday May 6th 2006, Colchester drew 0-0 at Yeovil Town in a League 1 fixture which again made history for the Essex club. The point gained saw them clinch promotion for the first time into the top two divisions of the League.

Who said that success and high attendances go together? Despite gaining automatic promotion Colchester United had by far the lowest average home League attendance in the division - just 3,969. In contrast Nottingham Forest had by far the highest home League average in the division - 20,257 - but they didn't even make the play-offs!

At the Rotherham United v Port Vale Carling Cup First Round match on Tuesday 23rd August 2005 Clive Oliver refereed and his son Michael ran one of the lines. It was the first time that a father and son had officiated together at a senior match in England. Referees
