Sadly a season after being relegated from the Football League Newport County ran out of money and were unable to complete their fixtures in the Conference. They played their last Conference match away to Maidstone United on 11th February 1989 with the clubs' last competitive match being a Clubcall League Cup match against Kidderminster on February 21st (results). On February 27th 1989 they were declared bankrupt, left the Conference and Newport County ceased to exist after 77 years. In June of 1989 a new Newport club was founded and the fight-back started.
