Stevenage gave eventual cup finalists Newcastle United a tough time in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup. At Broadhall Way a crowd of 8040 witnessed an evenly fought contest with Alan Shearer and Giuliano Grazioli scoring in the 1-1 draw. In front of 36,705 at St James' Park  Stevenage gave the Premier League side another tough match, losing only by a 2-1 margin.

Promoted Halifax Town were promoted to the Football League, replacing Doncaster Rovers in Division 3

RelegatedSlough Town dropped down to the Ryman Isthmian League after being expelled from the Conference as their Wexford Park ground was not up to Conference standards. Gateshead and Stalybridge were both relegated to the Unibond Northern Premier League. Replacing the three relegated clubs were Barrow from the Unibond NPL, Forest Green Rovers from the Dr Martens Southern League and Kingstonian from the Rymans Isthmian League.
