The Second Division of the Football League was increased from 12 to 16 clubs for the start of the 1893/94 season. Lancashire League champions Liverpool - along with Newcastle United, Rotherham Town and Woolwich Arsenal - were elected to fill those four places. Voting figures have not survived the passage of time.
