The bottom three in the Football League
Division Two - Burslem Port Vale, Rotherham Town and Crewe Alexandra
- were required to seek re-election. Rotherham Town decided not to
seek re-election but the other two League sides joined with eight
non-league sides (including Midland League Gainsborough Trinity and
Walsall) in a vote for the three League places for the 1896/97
