At the end of the season Burton Wanderers merged with Burton Swifts to form Burton United. The first team played in the Football League, the reserves in the Midland League.

Northampton Town, Rushden Town and Wellingborough all left the Midland League at the end of the season.

At the Football League AGM Midland League Doncaster Rovers were one of six non-league sides who challenged the three League sides seeking re-election in the vote for League membership. Voting -

* New Brighton Tower resigned from the Football League in September 1901 and being the highest placed non-league club in the vote at the AGM, Doncaster Rovers accepted an invitation to take their place.
