The Football League was
extended to two divisions at the end of the 1891/92 season, the top
division increasing to 16 clubs and a new 12-club Second Division
being formed. Northern League clubs who took part in the vote for
one of the two extra places in Division 1 were Newcastle East End
and Sheffield United plus a combined bid from Middlesbrough and
Middlesbrough Ironopolis. Voting for membership of Division One (WBA
were one of 4 League clubs who finished in a re-election position
but were not required to take part in the poll as they were FA Cup

Following the above vote,
Sheffield United were invited to join the new Second Division (no
vote) but Newcastle East End and the combined
Middlesbrough/Middlesbrough Ironopolis declined invitations to join
the lower division. |
