      SUNDERLAND
Election to the Football League 1889/90

At the Football League AGM in 1889 Sunderland became the first new club to be voted into the League when they replaced Stoke in the competition. The voting figures were not recorded in the minutes of the meeting.

Sunderland hadn't played in a league competition prior to joining the Football League. Their proud boast of the only league they had played in being the top flight of the Football League ended  at the end of the 1957/58 season when the club suffered their first relegation.
