The perfect debut? Following his £13,000 transfer from Bradford PA, Len Shackleton (pictured above) made his Newcastle United debut on October 5th 1946 against Newport County at St James' Park. Newcastle won 13-0, equalling the highest score in the Football League, and the 'Clown Prince of Soccer' scored six of them, including a hat-trick in just two and a half minutes.

A bitter winter decimates the season - postponed matches.
