The headlines on Saturday 30th August 1955 were that
Harold Bell
didn't get a game. Why so? Well, since the Tranmere midfielder played for his club in the first match after football resumed following the end of WW2 he had up to then been ever-present in the Tranmere side. That's 9 season without missing a first team match - 401 consecutive League matches and, if you include FA Cup, Liverpool Senior Cup and Cheshire Bowl games,  459 consecutive first team games. If there is a record that will never be broken - surely that is it!

Chesterfield became the first club from the lower divisions to reach the FA Youth Cup final. And with Gordon Banks in goal they came close to upsetting the 'Busby Babes'.
FA Youth Cup Finals

Despite their successful season in the League, Derby County suffered an embarrassing defeat in the FA Cup. Their 1-6 Second Round home defeat to Midland League Boston United still ranks as the worst home defeat by a League side against a non-league side in the competition (shared with Carlisle v Wigan in 1934/35).
