 On
Wednesday 22nd April 1959 Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vic Rouse became
the first player from the Fourth Division to win a full international cap
when appearing for Wales against Northern Ireland in Belfast. Wales lost the
Home International match 4-1 and that proved to be his one and only senior
    appearance for his country.
An amazing signing for Watford. Cliff Holton turned down both Aston
Villa and Liverpool to move to Fourth Division Watford from Arsenal for what
was then a record fee paid by Watford of £10,000. The Watford Supporters
Club chipped in £3,000 of that total. In front of 14,156 - the best crowd at
Vicarage Road for two years - he made his Watford debut against Gateshead on
October 25th 1958. Watford won that one 5-1 and although the centre-forward
didn't score in that match he scored his first two goals for the Hornets the
following Saturday in the 5-3 victory at Oldham Athletic.
    Hartlepools United (they had that
extra s in those days!) recorded their record League score and became to the
first club to score double figures in a Fourth Division match when they beat
    Barrow 10-1 on April 4th 1959.   |
