* After finishing their European Cup Second Round tie against Borussia Moenchengladbach 2-2 on aggregate Everton won through to the Third Round 4-3 on penalties.

**  Everton lost their European Cup Third Round tie against Panathinaikos on the away goals rule after finishing 1-1 on aggregate.

*** Everton's FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool was played at Old Trafford, Manchester United FC.

Because of their European Cup commitments Everton decided not to enter the League Cup in 1970/71 which was the last time that a club declined to enter the competition.
