Halifax Town started the season with a 2-1 Watney Cup defeat of Manchester United before 19,765 fans at The Shay - it was an embarrassing first match in charge for new United manager Frank O'Farrell.

Despite a second season in Division 3, Aston Villa's home support stuck with them. Their average home League crowd of 31,952 was the 13th best in the whole of the Football League.

Roy Sproson made his debut for Port Vale in the 1950/51season and played his last match in 1971/72. His 22 seasons at Vale Park was a record for a player at a single club until one Ryan Giggs came along.
