Colchester United hit the headlines by winning the Watney Cup. They defeated First Division WBA in the final. The match ended level at 4-4 and penalties were used to decide the outcome. The Watney Cup brought the penalty shoot-out to the British game - but surely it wouldn't catch on!

A footballing outpost lost its Football League club when Barrow were voted out of the competition, fifty years after their debut season. It was a sad end for them, losing 1-7 at Exeter in their last match. Despite finishing eight points and two places off bottom spot they lost their place to Hereford United in the second ballot.
