Argentina won the World Cup for the first time in the summer of 1978, beating Holland 3-1 in the final played on home soil. Just two weeks after the final Tottenham hit the headlines by signing two of the Argentine squad - Ossie Ardiles and Ricardo Villa - for a combined fee of about £750,000. In just the fourth League match the pair played for the club Spurs lost 0-7 at Liverpool, the clubs' record league defeat.

The transfer of Trevor Francis from Birmingham to Nottingham Forest was the first £1 million transfer fee in English football. Francis made his Forest debut in the Forest 'A' team!

Nottingham Forest won the European Cup (they beat Malmo 1-0 in the final at the Olympic Stadium in Munich) and set a new record in the League - 42 consecutive League matches unbeaten.

Liverpool regained the League title with new highest points and lowest goals conceded records.
