England cricketer Ian Botham signed for Scunthorpe United in March 1980, making his League debut as a substitute at Bournemouth on March 25th 1980, a 3-3 draw. He made his last appearance in the League at home to Peterborough on February 12th 1985, a 2-1 victory. In total he made 11 League appearances for the Irons, four of those as substitute.

Goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar played his first matches in the Football League - for Crewe Alexandra. In his final match for the club - against York City at Gresty Road on May 3rd 1980 - the goalkeeper scored for the only time in his League career, from the penalty spot.

R With the formation of a new national senior non-league competition - then called the Alliance Premier League -  the non-league challenge was now limited to just one club. Alliance Champions Altrincham therefore challenged the four clubs seeking re-election in the vote for League membership. Voting -
