Rushden & Diamonds continued their progress into the non-league elite with another good season in the Conference and a Third Round place in the FA Cup. After defeating Shrewsbury in the 1st Round and Doncaster in the 2nd the Diamonds took top Premier League side Leeds United to two matches before suffering defeat in the 3rd Round. Their 6,441 crowd against Leeds proved to be an all-time record at Nene Park while their top home league attendance - 6,312 against Cheltenham - was the top Conference crowd of the season.

Promoted Cheltenham Town were promoted to the Football League, Scarborough were relegated from the League to take their place.

Relegated Barrow were expelled from the Conference after Barrow AFC (1901) went bust and the Conference wouldn't allow the new Barrow club - Barrow AFC (1999) Ltd - to take their place. They dropped down to the Unibond NPL. Leek Town were relegated to the Unibond Northern Premier League and  Farnborough were relegated to the Ryman Isthmian League. Replacing the three relegated clubs were Altrincham from the Unibond NPL, Nuneaton Borough from the Dr Martens Southern League and Sutton United from the Rymans Isthmian League.
