After two seasons out of the Football League Barnet won back their League place by finishing as Conference champions. The title race with Bristol Rovers went to the last day of the season and although Rovers beat Alfreton 7-0 at home Barnet also won to take the title by a point.

The attendance for the Bristol Rovers v Alfreton match at the Memorial Ground was 11,085, a record crowd for a Conference match.

Three weeks later Bristol Rovers did win back their place in the Football League when beating Grimsby Town on penalties in the play off final. The Wembley attendance was 47,029 which set a new record for a Conference play-off match.

The FA Trophy final was also decided by penalties. In a giantkilling act Wrexham were beaten by Conference North side North Ferriby United, 5-4 on pens after finishing extra time 3-3.

Four Conference sides found themselves in the Third Round of the FA Cup. But their interest ended there - Dover, Gateshead and Wrexham were beaten by Premier League sides and Southport lost to Championship side Derby County.
