For the second season in a row a club from Division 3 (North) reached the FA Cup semi-final. York City had beaten First Division sides Blackpool and Tottenham in earlier rounds and nearly did the same in the semi against Newcastle at Hillsborough. That match ended 1-1 and in the replay at Roker Park, Newcastle won 2-0 and went on to beat Manchester City in the final.

A generous Christmas present was given by Rochdale's Danny Murphy, Kenny Boyle and George Underwood who each scored in their own net in a 7-2 defeat at Carlisle United in a League match on Saturday December 25th 1954. Underwood then broke his leg two days later in the return fixture!
