Until the 1990s League clubs rarely moved grounds, but Southend United did that at the start of the 1955/56 season. Technically though they were returning to a previous ground although when they had played their before the pitch level was some 50ft higher! Their first home in 1906 was at Roots Hall but the club then moved to the Kursaal ground and later the Southend Stadium. Their old ground at Roots Hall was used as a quarry and by the time they returned the surface was 50ft lower due to the excavation of and and gravel. Southend beat Norwich 3-1 in the opening match.

Football can be a funny old game. Brighton scored a club record 122 League goals in1955/56 (but weren't promoted) and had a run of 10 home league and cup wins on the trot. The 10th win in that run was 6-0 against Millwall in the League. A week later they entertained Millwall in the FA Cup - and lost 2-1!
