The 1962/63 season was definitely one before global warming was invented, it proved to be one of the worst on record as far as football was concerned. Villa played just two League matches in January and February which meant that 14 matches - exactly a third of the total League fixtures - had to be played in April and May. Perhaps not surprisingly the end of season congestion saw Villa lose a record 11 League matches on the trot. The FA Cup was also disrupted. After a Third Round draw with Bristol City on January 16th the replay was not played until March 7th with Villa being knocked out four days after that in the Fourth Round at Old Trafford. The League Cup proved to be a high-point although again the weather caused problems. The first leg of the semi against Sunderland was played on January 12th but the second leg had to wait until April 22nd. Summer was almost with us when the two-legged final was finally played. A defeat was bad enough - but one to Birmingham City seemed to sum up the season as a whole!

The winter of 1962/63.
