* Newcastle's away First Division match against Nottingham Forest was played at the Meadow Lane ground of Notts County following a serious fire at Forest's City Ground - The fire

** Newcastle beat Real Zaragoza of Spain on the away goals rule after their Inter-Cities Fairs Cup 3rd Round tie finished 4-4 on aggregate.

*** The First Division fixture between Manchester City and Newcastle on 1st February 1969 - the third times the clubs had met in a week - was abandoned in the 41st minutes after continual rain had turned the Maine Road pitch into a quagmire. The score was 1-1 at the time - match void.
