      P W D L F A Pts
  Leading League goalscorer:
Bryan Robson
 (West Ham United)
 24  goals

Despite scoring less goals than Sheffield United who were relegated Crystal Palace denied great rivals rivals Brighton the Div 2 title with a 2-0 last match victory over Burnley in front of what is still a record Selhurst Park crowd - 51,482.

The turnstiles were less busy at St James' Park where a post-war low League crowd of  7,152 were at the Newcastle v Wrexham match in March. But it got worse - the match was abandoned at half time because of rain and when restaged in May only 7,134 turned up!

Five minutes before the end of their FA Cup tie against Maidstone United, Charlton team-mates Derek Hales and Mike Flanagan were sent off - for fighting each other!
