      P W D L F A Pts
  Leading League goalscorer:
Terry Curran
 (Sheffield Wednesday)
 22  goals

For the first season the two Sheffield clubs played each other in League matches outside the top two divisions. The first of those matches was on 26th December 1979 when 49,309 were at Hillsborough to see Wednesday beat United
4-0, still a record Third Division attendance. The receipts figure of £70,000 was also a Third Division record at the time. The return at Bramall Lane on Saturday April 5th 1980 (1-1) was watched by 45,156.

The first goal conceded by Reading keeper Steve Death against Brentford on the opening day of the season - ironically an own goal - ended a record 1103 minutes without him conceding a League goal. The record lasted until 2009 when beaten by Edwin van der Sar.
