Chesterfield came close to becoming the first club from the lower divisions to appear in an F.A. Cup Final. They led Middlesbrough 2-0 at Old Trafford in the semi-final before eventually drawing 3-3, but had a 'goal' controversially disallowed. The replay was a disappointment for them, losing 3-0 at Hillsborough

Amazingly another Division 2 side - Stockport County - provided the opposition to Middlesbrough in the semi-finals of the Coca Cola Cup. Middlesbrough prevailed in that semi as well but lost both finals and were relegated from the Premier League!
