Despite the increasing dominance of the Premier Division clubs Wycombe Wanderers became the second club from the lower divisions in four seasons to reach the FA cup semi-finals. It was expected to be easy for semi-final opponents Liverpool who had drawn away to Barcelona in a UEFA Cup semi three days previously, but Wycombe had not read that script. They more than held their own for the first 80 minutes or so but two goals in five minutes were decisive for the Merseysiders who eventually won 2-1.
