LEAGUE 2 2017/18 | |||||||||||||||
Leading League goalscorers: Bill Kee (Accrington Stanley) and Marc McNulty (Coventry City) 25 goals Congratulations to League 2 champions Accrington Stanley -
now that was a first! Accrington clubs have been in the Football League
since its formation in 1888 - although not ever-present - but never before has
a side from Accrington won promotion let alone a championship
title. Promoted runners-up Luton Town also made a few headlines of their own which started in their first League match of the new season - they beat Yeovil 8-2 at Kenilworth Road. Later in the season they had home victories over Stevenage (7-1) and Cambridge United (7-0). At the bottom of the table Barnet were relegated from the Football League for the third time in 17 years but for the other club who suffered the drop, Chesterfield, it was a return to non-league circles for the first time since 1921. They were knocked out but apart from that it was a dream FA Cup
Fourth Round tie for Newport County! They drew 1-1 with mighty Tottenham
Hotspur before 9,836 home fans - a record for County at Rodney Parade -
before losing 2-0 at Wembley in the replay. Spurs were using Wembley at the
time while White Hart Lane was being redeveloped. |
