The BBC introduced the Sports Personality of the Year award in 1954 and six years later expanded the format to include additional awards for the 'Team of the Year' and 'Overseas Personality of the Year'. The team award would be awarded to 'the team in an individual sport or sporting discipline that has achieved the most notable performance in the calendar year to date. The team should have significant UK interest or involvement'. Over the years a number of different methods have been used to decide on the winner - a public vote, by a panel of sporting journalists and a panel of experts chosen by the BBC. Past winners - |
