Who said football is a young man's game? Fifty-five year old Dave Beasant found himself named as Stevenage's substitute goalkeeper for their League 2 match at Carlisle on October 11th 2014. Beasant famously saved a penalty in Wimbledon's 1988 FA Cup final victory over Liverpool and later won two England caps but last played in the League back in 2003. Stevenage's goalkeeping coach found his name on the team-sheet after an injury to his goalkeeping son - Sam Beasant - left the club short of cover between the posts. Coincidentally Carlisle had their goalkeeping coach, Tony Caig, named as their sub but the sprightly 40-year-old had been a regular Carlisle sub at the time. If Beasant had played he would have become the oldest person to play in the Football League but as it was neither of the two senior citizens - with a combined age of 95 - were called on to make an appearance.
