Maidstone United lost their Football League place at the start of the 1992/93 season due to financial problems. They had spent heavily on gaining a place in the Football League but the debt proved to be unmanageable by the start of what should have been their fourth season in the League. Their first scheduled League match in the 1992/93 season was due to be away to Scunthorpe but that was cancelled and two days later the club resigned from the Football League as they were unable to guarantee that they would be able to fulfil their fixtures. Maidstone had been the tenants of neighbours Dartford but deprived of the rental income Maidstone had provided the Southern Leaguers soon followed Maidstone into bankruptcy with the Watling Street ground they had shared being sold off to help repay debts. |
