Leading
League goalscorer: George Camsell (Middlesbrough) 59 goals George Camsell's 59 goals (scored
in 37 matches and including 9 hat-tricks) was a Football League record for
the most League goals scored in a season. It lasted just 12 months
until Dixie Dean scored 60 goals in 1927/28. The second promotion spot was settled on goal average, by just .005 of a goal! Manchester City beat Bradford City 8-0 on the last day of the season to finish with a goal average of 1.770 but Portsmouth's 5-1 victory over Preston on the same day gave them an average of 1.775. Despite scoring 108 League goals had Manchester City scored one more goal - or conceded one less - they would have gone up. Players taking an early bath caused the abandonment of the Oldham v Brentford FA Cup tie - abandoned matches. |
