      LEAGUE 1    2009/10

Leading League goalscorer:
Rickie Lambert
 (Southampton 30 goals,
Bristol Rovers 1 goal)
 31  goals

After Norwich suffered a record 1-7 home defeat against their traditionally more junior neighbours Colchester United on the opening day of the season no prizes for guessing who was the first managerial casualty of the season - Norwich's Bryan Gunn was out of a job within a week. A few days later the Canaries poached Colchester manager Paul Lambert as a replacement for Gunn. Amazingly, Lambert led them to the League 1 table and on their way Norwich won 5-0 at Colchester in the return League encounter.

Hartlepool had three points deducted for fielding an ineligible player. Gary Liddle played for them in their 2-0 home victory over Brighton on 5th April when he should have been sitting out the first of a two-match suspension after picking up his 10th booking of the season in United's previous game. Hartlepool lost the three points earned against Brighton and also suffered a suspended fine of £10,000.
