When Walsall  turned up for a Second Division fixture at Manchester United they immediately objected to the state of the home pitch - it was little more than sand and mud. The match went ahead and United won
14-0 but the match was declared void and ordered to be replayed. That time the Heathens only won 9-0!

It was not the best of seasons for Walsall. Financial problems meant that the players didn't always get paid and against Newcastle in December they refused to take to the field until they had a promise of payment. The match kicked off late and later had to be abandoned but the result was allowed to stand

Bottom of the heap though were Crewe Alexandra who lost all 15 away League matches during the season.

It didn't take long for Arsenal to fall foul of the footballing authorities. In only their second league season abuse of a referee saw their ground closed for five weeks forcing home matches to be played at New Brompton (Gillingham) and Leyton.

    Test Matches Test Series
   

Promotion and relegation was decided in a series of Test Matches between the bottom three clubs in Division 1 and the top three clubs in Division 2. The third from bottom club in Division 1 played the third club in Division 2, the second from bottom in Division 1 played the second club in Division 2 and the bottom club in Division 1 played the top club in Division 2 in one-off matches at neutral venues with the winners playing in Division 1 the following season and the losers in Division 2.
