The festive spirit was
certainly evident on Boxing Day 1963 when a 'mere' 157 goals were scored
in the 39 matches played in the four divisions of the Football League that
day.
But included in that figure was a record 66 goals for matches on a single
day in the top flight of the League. The most goals that day came in the
match at Craven Cottage where Fulham beat Ipswich Town 10-1, which was the
last time a club scored double figures in the top flight. The First Division results for Boxing
Day, Thursday December 26th 1963 were as follows -

Two days after those matches were
played - on Saturday December 28th 1963 - several of the heavily beaten
clubs found themselves playing the same opposition in the reverse
fixtures...with some interesting results. So two days after beating
Ipswich 10-1 Fulham lost 4-2 to the same opposition at Portman Road, West
Ham beat Blackburn 3-1 at Ewood Park and Manchester United had their
revenge over Burnley with a 5-1 victory at Old Trafford.

The most goals scored in the Premier
League on a single day was back on the final Saturday of the first Premier
League season - Saturday May 8th 1993. As far as the Premier League was
concerned the only issue still to be decided
on that day was the third relegation spot. Nottingham Forest and
Middlesbrough were already doomed to the drop and in the battle to avoid
joining them Oldham Athletic won and Crystal Palace
lost so the Londoners lost that battle on goal difference. So the goals
flowed with 47 goals being scored in the 9
matches -

The
above all relate to records for the highest goals scored in a single
day. The low-point for goals scored in the top division in a single day
was on Saturday April 28th 1923. Not quite a full programme - 20 of
the 22 First Division sides played - but in those 10 matches only 10 goals
were scored, none of them from an away side.

With results like that it is perhaps
not surprising that there was pressure to alter the laws to encourage more
attacking football. That pressure won the day and at the start of the
1925/26 there were dramatic changes...
(goals and goalscorers)
The missing match that day? It was because Bolton were playing Second
Division West Ham United in the FA Cup Final at Wembley, the first match
to be played at the ground. The official attendance was 126,047 with
perhaps 200,000 turning up at the stadium (the match was not all-ticket).
So there was some excitement around!
