By finishing bottom of Division 4 in 1987/88 Newport County suffered automatic relegation from the Football League with GM Vauxhall Conference champions Lincoln City taking their place (1987/88 Conference table). Unfortunately Newport didn't survive a full season in non-league football, financial problems forcing them to drop out of the Vauxhall Conference after declaring bankruptcy on February 27th 1989 (results). Newport County were reformed and regained their League place by winning through the Conference play-offs in 2012/13 - 2012/13 Conference table.

** The 2019/20 season ended early because of the coronavirus pandemic with the last League 2 match - other than the play-offs - being played on Tuesday March 10th. Because of the differing amount of matches played by clubs it was decided that a points per game (PPG) table would replace the traditional points table to decide final League placings - Newport County finished 15th using the traditional points system but improved to 14th using PPG.
