At the end of the 1986/87 season Lincoln were the first club to suffer automatic relegation to the Vauxhall Conference, being replaced by Conference champions Scarborough - 1986/87 Conference table. They themselves finished as champions in their only season in the Conference and were promoted, replacing Newport - 1987/88 Conference table.

For the fifth time in their history Lincoln City lost their Football League place, finishing second-to-bottom of the League they were relegated along with Stockport County, their places being taken by Blue Square Conference promoted clubs Crawley Town and AFC Wimbledon - 2010/11 Conference table and play-off results. They won their League place back at the end of the 2016/17 season when finishing as National League champions - Lincoln and Forest Green Rovers replacing Hartlepool United and Leyton Orient. 2016/17 National League table and play-off results.

* The 2019/20 season ended early because of the coronavirus pandemic with the last League 1 matches being played on Tuesday March 10th. At that time Lincoln were 15th in the table using the traditional points system but when it was decided that an average points per game (PPG) system would be used to decide the final placings Lincoln dropped to 16th.
